Announcements
- Elke asked that everyone inform her of any FY08 purchases they are planning. We have no 6 GeV budget to draw on!
- A new Chinese group is joining Hall D. They likely will work on trigger simulation, trigger hardware, and maybe other topics. Resident at JLab will be a post-doc and a grad student. They will start in Feb (all going well with their visas, etc).
- The FCAL test may be at Triumf instead of JLab...the calorimetry group is working on this. In either case JLab will provide the DAQ system.
Next Meeting
Note new meeting time, day, and frequency.
Next meeting is Fri 14-Dec-2007 2pm.
Starting in Jan we will alternate with the offline meeting Fri 2pm and meet every other week, rather than once per month.
New Action Items from this Meeting
- Combine and reconcile DAQ and Hall D milestones, derive manpower requirements, and determine if more manpower needed - Elliott and Graham.
- Form group to revisit energy-sum trigger algorithm - Dave D, Elliott, and new Chinese group.
Minutes
Attendees: Elliott W, Elke A, David L, Simon T, Mark I, Graham H, Dave A, Vardan G, Carl T, Ed J, Chris C, Fernando B, Dave D.
JLab DAQ group plans, progress and milestones - Graham Heyes
Details can be found in Graham's talk, see link above. Summary of major points presented:
- Overview of DAQ group goals, major tasks, and current responsibilities for the next three years.
- Many CODA 3.x ideas being retrofitted into CODA 2.x.
- Many new displays/GUIs needed to complement advances in ET, cMsg, EVIO, etc.
- New components needed are new ROC and EMU (event management unit).
- Vardan is continuing to work on experiment control.
- Many hardware projects include new TI, new TS, clock/trigger distribution, FADC, F1TDC, etc.
- System review in May 2008, Lehman review summer 2008 for CD-3.
- Is prototype TS needed by then, or just design document and circuit block diagrams?
- Graham noted that DAQ and Trigger were not seriously reviewed for CD-0, CD-1, and CD-2.
- Designs are for 10**8 operation even though CD-4 deliverable is operation at 10**7 photons/sec.
- There was much discussion as to what was needed for CD-3.
- For electronics, 80% design is acceptable, as component choice should be made as late as possible.
- There was some discussion on the priority of using Linux-based ROC's given that VxWorks ROC's work now. Clearly there are advantages
to using Linux ROC's, but work might be postponed until after CD-3. Also, outside groups might easily work on this.
- Graham presented a series of milestones with dates, see his talk referenced above.
Finally,
- Elliott and Graham will reconcile Hall D and JLab DAQ group milestones, then work back from the startup date evaluating manpower needs. From this we
will determine if there is enough manpower to do all the work.
CD-3 plans - All
- Most of the discussion on this topic took place during Graham's talk.
- Elliott noted that we need to choose a controls framework well before the CD-3 review.
- Elke noted that CD-3 officially requires 100% design, but in the case of electronics 80% is adequate, as one cannot
choose chips and components so early. 80% design can be satisfied by requirements documents and schematic layouts that do not list part numbers for all components.
- Elke asked if there is enough staff to do everything needed for CD-3. Does the JLab Electronics and DAQ groups need more help?
- Fernando and Chris noted that detector groups need to make decisions soon on number of FADC bits needed, etc, and that full electronics specifications/requirements are needed.
