New Action Items from this Meeting

  • Turn offline reconstruction program into a Coda Object - Dave L, Elliott

Minutes

Present: Elliott W, Dave L, Chris C, Simon T, Dave D, Dave A, Vardan G, Graham H, Fernando B, Beni Z, Eugene C.

Electronics

Fernando gave a brief update on the status of the FADC125 and other boards:

  • Bare board ready, mezzanine design done, 15 FPGA's total.
  • Expect final cost approx $4k for 72 channel module.
  • Has 3 x 24 channel connectors.
  • Will have 3 ready by 1-Oct - one for JLab, one for CMU, one for IUCF.
  • Production testing perhaps at IUCF, not sure yet.
  • Dave A will produce readout libraries, about 6 weeks after he receives a board.
  • Expect solid board and lib by end of 2009.
  • About 70 Watts/board, similar to FADC250.
  • F1TDC v2 and FADC250 v2 planned for FY10, redesigns starting now. These are production boards for Hall D.
  • Two types of F1TDC inputs: ECL and LVDS, depending on front-end plug-in module.

Chris summarized some additional work:

  • Trigger workshop went well, see notes and summary on Wiki.
  • Got new requirements at workshop, esp for FADC250.
  • Will hold again next year.
  • Firmware changes for all boards not simple, takes planning and time. Cannot do this too often.
  • Global trigger boards planned for FY10 (GTP, TS, etc.).
  • New hires in Electronics and DAQ groups coming soon.

Coil Tests

  • Elliott is developing schedules and manpower estimates.
  • We need more than one Mark Stevens if we have to share him with the FDC effort.
  • May need to get more high-class technician manpower.
  • PR for Allen-Bradley controls components is in and signed, buyer assigned, shouldn't take too long to place the order.

Java EVIO

Graham and Elliott summarized recent progress on a Java version of EVIO, the online event I/O package used by CODA.

  • A few people wrote basic I/O utilities for Java.
  • Dave Heddle (CLAS12) working on duplicating full C++ EVIO tree package in Java.
  • DAQ group will likely take over Dave's package and support it for all halls.

Online Farm

Graham presented initial thoughts on how online farms might be integrated into CODA3, see his talk above.

  • Existing ET system is foundation for data movement in CODA3.
  • Supplying farm nodes with data naturally done via ET systems.
  • AFECS, used by run control, will be used control farm system, as the latter must be part of the overall run control state machine.
  • Farm hardware implementation must be carefully designed and tuned.
  • Need to prototype farm node components...Dave L and Elliott will do this.
  • Event blocking strategy not worked out, but system is very flexible.
  • Need to consider distribution strategy for non-physics events.

CAN Controller for FCAL

  • FCAL has about 3000 Cockroft-Walton phototube bases, each one being a separate CAN device.
  • Not clear how many bases per CAN bus can be practically controlled, 128 is upper limit, Matt says 100 is electrical limit.
  • Cannot take too long to turn system on or off, or monitor.
  • Matt is purchasing Ethernet/CAN bridge for testing. It might work for final system.
  • Fallback: National Instruments cRIO system can control CAN buses, but two or three times more expensive than bridge solution.

daLog Message System

  • DAQ group implemented new cMsg based daLog message system to replace older daLog system.
  • Elliott instrumented CodaObjects to use new daLog system.
  • DAQ group will instrument new ROC, EB and ER (these are under development).
  • Vardan almost done with daLog message graphical browser.
  • Will demonstrate at next Online meeting.
  • Utility is that error and status messages from all components can be displayed in one GUI.
