General Construction Updates
- Bill has finalized the drawings for the gusset rings (fiber-reinforced Noryl) that go on the upstream and downstream faces of each package to help provide the gas seal. The drawings have been submitted to the machine shop. - Bill will make sure that we have the appropriate pins for the construction jig. He has completed a design plan for stack assembly and has submitted his drawings to the machine shop. - Bill will take on the preparation for a stack assembly document. A draft will be prepared before assembly of the full-scale prototype and then fleshed out during the process with relevant photographs taken. - Cable preparations: * The order for the LV cables have been out for a few weeks. * The HV cables are in hand and we are awaiting the connectors before Mark and Brian begin construction. * The signal cables and connectors are in hand and Mark and Brian will begin construction as they have time. - There was a snafu with the o-ring order and the vendor did not have what we wanted in stock. Bill will search for another vendor and re-place the order. - We will begin to have short daily meeting to review the work on the full-scale prototype construction and to ensure that any snags or problems that come up are immediately addressed. We are still aiming to have the prototype constructed by the end of the June.
Wire Frame Update
- The bits and pieces that Fernando ordered for the Phase 2 wire board soldering have arrived and Armen is back at work on the wire boards. He should have these finished by the end of next week if there are no surprises. The lazy susan system has been modified to include a much better microscope to replace the clumsy (and much hated) Mantis system. - We had the Phase 2 close-out meeting with IUCF last week and reviewed where we stand with the wire winding facility heading into Phase 3. We also discussed the Phase 3 budget proposal supplied by IUCF. We will discuss our plans internally and then be in contact with IUCF. - We are pushing hard to begin wire frame construction early next year and begin wire winding before the end of 2010. Hopefully this can all procede. We are now working to complete the simulation studies with Simon to determine if we want to offset neighboring wire layers. More to come in the upcoming months. - The wire frame construction document is located at: /u/group/halld/Engineering/PRELIMINARY DOCUMENTS. We will include the information on the wire electroplating process shortly. - Bill is now designing the jig for the wire electroplating operation and it will be ready for submission to the shop at some point in the future. We will make a decision shortly if/when we will electroplate the wires for the full-scale prototype. - Brian received the SEM scans for our wire from the W&M folks. He will generate a final QA report with photos and test results for all wires in the next several weeks. - Eugene is working to identify clean room space for FDC construction. He is in discussions with project management. More to come.
Cathode Update
- Cathode Board Orders * Cathode boards: The order arrived on Tuesday. We received only 3 full sets of 2 micron Cu boards and 1 full set of 5 micron Cu boards. The original order was supposed to be for 7 sets of 2 micron Cu boards and one set of 5 micron Cu boards. We will work to make due with what we have from this order and the previous order. The Allflex company is out of material and no more exists at the present time. * A minor issue with our center cathode board panels is that there is a Cu dot and letters "AT" right in the middle of the central beam hole! This needs to be rectified for the final board order. * Rigid-flex assemblies: Delivery is expected any day now. We will arrange for soldering of the preamp card connectors and the addressing resistors after board arrival. - Progress updates: * The 8 cathode frame laminates and G10 annuli have come back from the machine shop. So far three laminates have been completed and a fourth is underway. These laminations should be done by the end of next week if there are no competing work space issues with other FDC tasks. * Electrical QA on the new cathode boards has been completed and the boards are ready for edge cutting. * The aluminum clamp ring for the tensioning facility had its I.D. increased to give better access. We have one of the old 2 micron boards in the tensioner now and it has been put back together. As soon as Eugene completes the tensioning, we will put on one of our completed cathode frames. - Bill has been working on the cathode construction document. He has circulated a draft for comment. The file is located at /u/group/halld/Engineering/PRELIMINARY DOCUMENTS. - The company that makes our 2 micron Cu board material has already ended production of this line. They may be able to do one more production run for us given the significant amount of material (~1500 ft) that we are after. We are working to convince the company (Nippon Steel Chemical Co.) to complete this run for us. Roger prepared a PR that has been signed and passed onto the JLab procurement folks. DSC prepared a letter to send to the company to help convince them to complete a run for us. Stay tuned. - Roger needs to prepare a document for QA/stuffing/cleaning for the cathode boards and a similar document for the cathode daughter boards and ground boards. - Bill has come up with a scheme to secure the cathode boards flat up against the granite rock of our flatness measurement table. The work will add some new holes to the table using a diamond drill bit. There is about a week's worth of work that needs to be done before we can rescan the 5 micron Cu cathode board. Mark will rescan the board as soon as the system modifications are completed. - We still have one set of the 2-micron Cu boards from the first cathode order to lay-up. They will be needed for the full-scale prototype.
Cooling System Tests
- Fernando is in the process of writing up the results from his cooling system studies. Stay tuned for the GlueX note. He indicated that he is back to work on this document and it should be done shortly.
Cosmic Ray Test Stand
- Beni is continuing work to setup the cosmic ray telescope and test system in EEL 126. He would like to have it all up and functioning and understood before the end of June. - We still have some mysterious behavior with the small-scale prototype response with wiggles in the X vs. Y distributions that need to be understood. We decided to have a separate meeting to discuss what work we would like to do on the small-scale prototype. - Beni has started a bench test plan for the full-scale prototype and we discussed his preliminary document briefly. He will circulate it for feedback and we will continue to flesh it out. We want to make sure that we do some checks of gas leakage with the prototype. We agreed that the best procedure would be to use the P5 gas mixture (non-flammable). - Bill has designed a system to rotate the prototype from vertical to horizontal. The drawings will be submitted to the machine shop this week.
Work List
- The FDC short-term work list has been posted on the FDC web site. This is continually being updated and DSC welcomes any feedback or comments from the group.
