Cherenkov Detector Details

Helium Drift Chamber

  • From 1 to 18 degrees.
  • K/proton separation not shown but is included in the study.
  • Separation between Pions & Kaons as a function of momentum.
    • Theta dependence changes above 12 degrees but is not shown (not super large).

LHCb RICH

  • BIG IMPORTANT NOTE: These studies were performed with the parameters of the LHCb RICH AS IS (at a ~$4 million cost)
  • From 0 to ~11 degrees
  • 99.3% K/Pi separation from 0.6 to 2.6 GeV/c
  • Perfect K/Pi separation above 2.6 GeV/c
  • 99.3% K/proton separation from 2.0 to 10.0 GeV/c
  • Perfect K/proton separation above 10.0 GeV/c

Summary

Analysis

  • Branching fractions and formulas used for determination of signal / background ratios: File:Mattione Update 09172012 SignalToBackgroundCalc.pdf
  • Only the VertexP4 KinFit results (for both missing proton and no-missing) are shown here (results for no kinfit & p4 kinfit are in the reaction-specific sections)
  • Cuts: 8.5 < Eγ GeV < 9.0, PID confidence level (TOF, DC dE/dx) > 1%, Kinematic fit confidence level > 1%, +/- 1.5 Γ (~80% of signal integral) cut on resonance peaks
  • "K: Inclusive" CKOV-Cut: 3-sigma cut on whether the particle COULD be a kaon
  • "K: 1 Exclusive" CKOV-Cut: 3-sigma cut on whether at least one kaon candidate WAS NOT a pion (require that the particle was definitely not a kaon at 99.7% certainty)
    • Note: the loss of events due to this was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. However, this is because we get 4σ separation between pions & kaons with the TOF up to p = 2.5 GeV/c (with an 80ps σ) rather than up to 2 GeV/c as shown in the p-vs-theta plots in the proposal.

  • Note: Improvements in signal / background ratio (No-CKOV) by using VertexP4 KinFit instead of just P4 KinFit (with proton missing):
    • φ3(1850): 2.0x, Y(2175): 18.38x, η'1(2300): 8.5x, h'2(2600): 8.3x

Ratios as Function of Cuts

  • φ3(1850) VertexP4 KinFit Signal / Background Ratios as Function of Analysis Actions (for pre-CKOV ONLY!!)
    • NOTE: This isn't a fair signal / background ratio comparison because:
      • I don't cut on the φ3(1850) mass until near the end
      • In this pass of the analysis, I generated the bggen events with the entire photon energy spectrum (the next pass I'm only generating between 8.5 & 9.0 GeV)
      • I didn't put a photon energy cut until the end.
