• Should we use ControlNet as well as Ethernet/IP in the hall?

    • Is there really a network reliability problem?
    • Would we have to run a copper line to the counting house?
    • Should we use an additional PLC in the hall?
    • Should we locate the main PLC in the hall?
    • How much reliability do we need? What are the consequences of occasional network loss?
    • What are the mechanisms that cause loss of network connection other than hardware failure?
  • Resolution
    • Bryan and Brent say the high-class switches we will use in the hall are extremely reliable, as reliable as the PLC itself, so there doesn't seem to be a good reason to use ControlNet unless we are worried about loss mechanisms other than hardware failure.

    • Test what happens if an Ethernet cable is unplugged.

• When should we use a PC104 vs an IOC on a PC vs direct PLC control?

    • Should the FDC gas system use just PLC control and not use a PC104?
    • The FCAL CAN system probably requires an EPICS buffered virtual device running in a PC104.
    • Should we mix EPICS and PLC control in a single system?
