Availability of diamonds for CHESS run 11/2007

Our group is in general agreement with Ken Livingston not wanting us to take the Hall B diamond crystal target ladder back to Cornell again this year for our tests. Ken expects to receive a few (more than one) diamonds from Element 6 in the next few days. Ken asked for diamonds 20-50 microns thick, of near-perfect quality type I and type II. The other possible candidate for X-ray studies this year is a left-over fragment from the broken 20 micron Hall B diamond. Franz will look for where it is and see what possibilities exist for mounting it in a holder. There were a total of three pieces. The largest one is back in the Hall B target ladder. The second one is about 3mm x 1.5mm and might be usable for X-ray tests. The third one is less than 1mm2 and is not of much use to us.

Plans and schedule for new Si(331) monochromator

Yang has sent a basic description of our design for a new Si(331) asymmetric crystal monochromator to Ken Finkelstein. Ken has indicated that he will try to manufacture this crystal using the CHESS machine shop facilities. He asked for the first reflection to be with asymmetry factor around 5 and the second reflection to be symmetric (factor of 1). R. Jones will contact Ken Finkelstein about how to pay for the material and tooling costs for this fabrication.

Goals for upcoming X-ray studies

  1. Check the performance of the new beamline configuration with the improved resolution for studies of Diamond(2,2,0).
  2. Test ideas for speeding up the data acquisition with the CCD camera.
  3. Test new means for reducing the effects of air disturbance on the mounted crystals during a measurement.
  4. Characterize the crystal quality of any new crystals that Ken Livingston obtains from Element 6.
