FDC Weekly Meeting

Full-Scale Prototype Updates
- Procurements: * The G10 and Rohacell orders are both in hand. The Rohacell order has proven problematic with severe thickness variations from sheet to sheet and within a single sheet. Bill has been in contact with the supplier (Evonik) and they will send us a complete reorder within one week. * No update on the rigid-flex assembly order. The order should arrive at JLab by the end of this month. - Wire QA studies: * Still awaiting test studies from W&M SEM folks. Brian will talk to them to find out where they are. * Brian will prepare a final QA report with photos and test results for all wires when all studies are complete. - Mark S. is also responsible for upkeep of the list of procurements for the full-scale prototypes. * Location: M Drive/halld/Electronics, or for more sophisticated folks, /u/group/halld/Electronics. - Bill is working to put the local HV connectors selected by Fernando into the 3D CAD model and to detail how they will be attached (as they are quite massive). Bill will get back to this work when he has a chance.
Wire Frame Construction
- An updated draft of the wire frame assembly document has been prepared and will be posted on the FDC site shortly. - See the FDC wire frame specification/tolerance document. - Brian and Mark have completed 4 G10/Rohacell laminates and a fifth one is under vacuum now. The laminates have been made from the problematic Rohacell order but care has been taken to sort the different pieces to remove those that are too thin. On Tuesday of next week, all five laminates will be machined in the JLab shop to plane them to their final thickness and to put in the through-holes. Casy indicated that this work will take one week to complete. Bill will work with Casy on the final machining process. - The foam cores have been cut using the templates Bill design. They have been anodized and painted a soothing blue color. - In preparation for lamination of the circuit board rings onto the G10/foam laminates, the aluminum jig plate for assembly will be set up in the clean tent. Bill thinks that the second jig plate could be used as well. Brian or Mark will check on this. It might be possible to make two wire frames at a time. - We will be in contact with the JLab machine shop so that IUCF can be kept up to date on our plans for shipment. - Brian and Mark will work to complete a humidity test of our G10/foam laminate in a dry box. This work should be completed soon so that the vacuum bagging steps can be finalized in the procedures document. - Kim needs to complete the PCB stuffing/cleaning document. This should be done by the middle of February.
Cathode Planning
- We reviewed the cathode R&D timeline. Folks are reminded to pass on progress updates to Chuck every Wednesday. The current schedule is being kept on the mdrive at: * Location: M:\halld\Individual-Schedules\FDC or for more sophisticated folks, /u/group/halld/Individual-Schedules/FDC - Progress updates: * Part of the cathode edge cutting system has been put together and tested and the remaining pieces machined at FSU arrived today. Bill and Mark will complete assembly and start doing some test cuts to make sure that all works as designed. * The flatness measurement system is now controlled by a computer on the network. Finalizing communication between the computer and the VME board. Procedure write-up and results write-up somewhat in progress. Documentation of the system continues. See the FDC wiki page for details. * We discussed a bit about starting on the construction document. This work will get priority as soon as the wire frame construction gets a bit further along. We should plan to have a draft of this document available before the onset of construction of the first 5-micron Cu board in the second half of January. * The cathode R&D plan in the first part of January will focus on construction of a full cathode sandwich. This will include ground connections to the cathode foils and ground connections to the ground plane. After this work is done, we can proceed on the 5-micron Cu cathode. * Eugene ran into some problems with tensioning the 2 micron sample board. The tension varied by a factor of 2 across the board and he will require help from Brian to understand a better way to set a uniform tension so that we can measure the board distortions. After sitting for two weeks over the holiday break, Eugene remeasured the board tension and it had changed significantly in places. Many of the tension screws were found to be completely loose. Simon blames it on gremlins (stay tuned for shocking photographic proof). - See the FDC cathode frame specification/tolerance document.
Spacer Design
- Bill has completed the prints for the spacer construction and will pass them onto the machine shop shortly after the wire frame work is done.
Stack Assembly Procedures
- DSC, Brian, and Bill will work to finalize the stack assembly construction document that has been prepared. This document should be in place before we get too far in the construction process. - Bill has found some plastic threaded rods that could be used to compress the stack. We will be receiving some samples shortly and will carry out some loading tests.
Cooling System Tests
- Fernando is in the process of writing up the results from his cooling system studies. Stay tuned for the GlueX note. - Bill has done some ANSYS modeling to better study the connector that goes from the daughter board card to the cooling loop. These will be added to Fernando's note.
Documentation
- Roger needs to prepare a document for QA/stuffing/cleaning for the cathode boards and a similar document for the cathode daughter boards and ground boards.
Small-Scale Prototype
- We will be moving the FDC cosmic ray test stand from the Test Lab back to the EEL building. This move should be completed in the next 6 months or so.
Calibrations

Work List
- The FDC short-term work list has been posted on the FDC web site. This is continually being updated and DSC welcomes any feedback or comments from the group.
