Latest revision as of 16:34, 9 March 2017

Purpose

  1. To give an overview of hadron spectroscopy, with a focus on physics analysis opportunities with Jefferson Lab experimental data.
  2. To discuss software and analysis techniques that will be essential in extracting first physics results from GlueX data.
  3. To have hands-on sessions for participants to actively engage in performing physics analyses.
    • Specifically, a simulated analysis of polarization observables and spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) of γp→ωp
  • These talks, tutorials, and hands-on sessions will be catered towards graduate students to help familiarize them with doing physics analyses with Jefferson Lab experimental data.

Location and Time

The workshop will take place at:

DATES: May 11 - 13, 2016

LOCATION: CEBAF Center L102 - L104

Registration & Requirements

  • Registration Page
  • Participants List
  • All attendees are required to bring their own laptop to the workshop to use a virtual machine with the GlueX software.
    • It must have enough memory (4+ GB RAM) and free hard disk space (20+ GB) to run a virtual machine, which will be distributed at the workshop.
    • It must have VirtualBox installed (v5.0.18 or later): Download VirtualBox
  • To obtain the virtual machine image (~5 GB), download it from the Hall-D web:

Workshop Software

The workshop software is also installed on the JLab CUE. Please see the README.md in

/group/halld/Software/workshops

for more details on using it, but in short, set your HALLD_MY environment variable and then

source /group/halld/Software/workshops/env_ws.csh

The data used in the workshop can be found in the data_2016 folder in the same directory as the README.

The following software is installed on the VM:

  • xerces-c: 3.1.3
  • cernlib: 2005
  • root: 5.34.36
  • amptools: 0.9.1
  • evio: 4.4.6
  • ccdb: 1.06.01
  • jana: 0.7.5p1
  • hdds: physics_workshop_2016
  • sim-recon: physics_workshop_2016
  • gluex_root_analysis: physics_workshop_2016
  • gluex_workshops: latest commit on master branch

To install the software offsite using hdpm, set your GLUEX_TOP and HALLD_MY environment variables, and then run the following commands:

hdpm select --xml https://halldweb.jlab.org/dist/version_workshop-2016.xml
hdpm build amptools gluex_root_analysis

If you are using build_scripts, use version_workshop-2016.xml to direct your builds.

Remote Participation

  1. To join via a Web Browser, go to the page [1] https://bluejeans.com/3293630059.
  2. More information on connecting to bluejeans is available.

2013 GlueX Analysis Workshop

  • We conducted a similar workshop back in 2013, doing a simulated full analysis of γp→π+π+π-n. It covered the software and analysis steps necessary to do an amplitude analysis of this channel, from signal generation through amplitude fitting.
  • It is not necessary to have gone through the 2013 workshop talks and exercises to attend the 2016 workshop. However, you will probably benefit if you do, as certain topics will not be covered and others will be condensed (e.g. Doing an analysis in JANA).
  • 2013 Workshop Link

Student Travel Support

  • We have $3.5k in funding to help defray the travel expenses for students to come to the workshop, that may not have been able to come otherwise.
  • If you are a student (and a JLab user) and would like to apply for travel support, please send an email to Paul Mattione (pmatt@jlab.org) by March 7th with the following information:
    1. Your name and institution
    2. A breakdown of your estimated travel and lodging costs (not meals).
    3. One short paragraph on your current or future GlueX physics analysis plans (not looking for an abstract, just want to know what you're interested in).
  • Funding is limited, but we'll try to help as many students as we can.

Agenda: Wednesday May 11, 2016

Agenda: Thursday May 12, 2016

Agenda: Friday May 13, 2016

  • 9:00 Working with Experimental Data (100) --- Chair: Justin Stevens
  • 10:40 Coffee (20)
  • 11:00 Open Session: Q & A + User Analyses (90) --- Chair: Paul Mattione
    • This session is an opportunity for users to ask the experts any question about physics, or about doing physics analyses. Then, the analysis experts will be available to help users on their analyses of their own channels (or with the example analyses).
  • 12:30 Lunch (90)
  • 2:00 Bonus Open Session (Optional) (180) --- Chair: Sean Dobbs
    • This optional session is an opportunity for users to ask the experts for help on analyzing their own channels (or with the example analyses).
  • 5:00 Adjourn
